Article by ExploreSAC on Tuesday, 29 of July , 2008 at 9:53 am

Located in Old Sacramento, the California State Railroad Museum is one of North America’s most popular railroad museums. It’s a great place to bring the family and where students can learn more about how trains played a major role in California’s rich history. Visitors can experience, first hand, restored trains, interactive exhibits, and rides on a real steam locomotive on weekends during Summer. The museum is open daily, but closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day.

Tower Theatre & Cafe

Article by ExploreSAC on Sunday, 20 of July , 2008 at 6:34 pm

Tower Theatre and Tower Cafe, on Broadway in downtown Sacramento, mark the location where the Tower Records music store chain started. The Tower Cafe now sits where the original Tower Drugs was located. It was in the back of the drug store that Tower Records was born. The original Tower Records neon sign, see below, is now above the cafe. The Tower Theatre is classic 1940’s era and is a favorite for indie movie buffs. Tower Records is now closed, but the theatre and cafe live on.

California State Fair

Article by ExploreSAC on Wednesday, 16 of July , 2008 at 9:07 pm

The California State Fair is an annual event held at Cal Expo in late August and is like no other local county fair. Nearly one million people are in attendance every year and enjoy midway, carnival rides, exhibits, county displays, monorail and unique fried foods (i.e. Twinkies). Some other favorite areas include livestock, forrestry, and crafts in the Pavilions. Recent years have had events like motocross jumping sponsored by Toyota. Parking is several dollars on top of general admission, but many people choose to park at Arden Fair, or other nearby parking lots.
