While at the Discovery Museum’s Science & Space Center with the family this past weekend, we were told about the Powerhouse Science Center that recently received a $7million dollar grant and is expected to open in 2013 on the site of the PG&E Power Plant on Jibboom Street. The Science & Space Center will move to the new location, which will house four floors of exhibit space, including a new digital planetarium theater, classrooms, Challenger Learning Center, riverfront restaurant and special events center.

Just imagine! Sacramento will soon be home to a high-tech, hands-on, science museum that immerses our children – and our children’s children – in science, technology, engineering and math. Powerful demonstrations will show that the skills necessary for tomorrow’s economic success are fascinating and fun! Positioned between Discovery Park and Old Sacramento, along the river walk and just off I-5, a power plant over 100 years old will be reborn into a regional destination and educational landmark for students, teachers, and families.

Thanks to the leadership of dozens of businesses, educational institutions, and individuals with their eyes set on the future, Sacramento will soon see one of its most significant transformations as the 60-year old Discovery Museum Science & Space Center on Auburn Boulevard becomes the Powerhouse Science Center.

As a followup to the post about the Great American Backyard Campout on June 25th, I thought I’d share the great backyard camping experience I had with my son this past weekend… I’ve been looking forward to this pretty much since my son was born, but mostly this last year now that he’s old enough to really enjoy the experience.

Here are a couple of lists that may help you with your backyard camping experience. Keep in mind that these were made with a 3 or 4 year old in mind and will likely change depending on the number of people involved and their ages.

Supplies:

Tent, sleeping bags & pillows

Light/lantern

Fire pit & wood (check local laws)

Cooler or ice chest for food & drinks

Hot dogs, buns & condiments

Smores: graham crackers, chocolate & marshmallows

Things to keep the kid(s) busy!

Fun things to do:

Be a botanist – collect leaves from at least 10 different plants. (Optional: explain species & create a scrap book)

Have a scavenger hunt – search the yard for things you’ll need (sticks for marshmallows, food, etc.) or other prizes your child will enjoy

Be an astronomer – identify constellations and planets. (the Google Sky Map app for your smart phone is helpful, but you may prefer to go gadget-free)

Tell stories (save the ghost stories for the older kids)

Marshmallows for Smores!

Things to remember:

Kids may need more layers to stay warm at night

Respect your neighbors and be quiet during later hours

Check local laws regarding outdoor fires

Give yourself plenty of time to recover (that soft grass isn’t that soft after a night’s sleep)

So, what did I take away from this experience? I can’t wait to do it again! The best thing I did was plan this out in advance, so everything went smoothly. That’s not always possible with a young child and an exciting new experience. It’s also great practice for when it’s time to go on a real camping trip. The kids will be more familiar and less anxious about sleeping outdoors and being away from their creature comforts.

Related posts:

My family and I attended the Pear Fair in Courtland, CA recently and it got me thinking about a couple things…

I have some fond memories of going to a public pool while staying with family a few weeks during the Summer… My parents probably liked the fact that I wasn’t out riding my bike on busy streets or getting into trouble. In the Sacramento area, public pools also provide an alternative to the dangers of swimming in local rivers. Unfortunately, the number of pools open to the public is much lower this Summer.

The City of Sacramento recently announced which of the public pool will be open, or closed, due to budget reductions. Because funding to maintain the city’s swimming pools has been reduced from $3.5 million to under $1 million, several Sacramento area pools will be closed. Others will have reduced hours and/or services.

From: City of Sacramento Summer 2001 Aquatics Directory

Pool hours, dates & programming may be affected due to potential budget reductions beginning July 1, 2011. Recreational swim hours, fees, and dates may be subject to change. We regretfully cannot take any program registration payments at City pool facilities.

Fair Oaks Recreation and Park District hosted their annual Easter Eggstravaganza at Fair Oaks Park on Saturday, April 23, 2011. The park, located somewhat on the corner of Fair Oaks Blvd. and Madison Avenue in Fair Oaks, is a nice looking park. It was the first time we’ve been there and even without the event, the park had nice amenities. We visited along with several people associated with a meetup group my wife belongs to and enjoyed the pancake breakfast, Easter egg hunt, bounce house, giant slide, train, carnival games etc. Here’s what the park district’s site has to say about the event:

The Fair Oaks Recreation & Park District presents an “Eggciting” Easter adventure featuring a FREE egg hunt for all ages. Please join us for a morning breakfast, carnival games, choo choo rides, bounce houses, an egg toss competition, and much more!! Calling all adults….please help raise funds for the Fair Oaks Youth Advisory Board by purchasing a ticket for $3.00 each for the Adult Egg hunt. Carnival Tickets are $.50 each or $10.00 for the package deal. No refunds, no exceptions! All ticket sales will end at 12:00pm, one hour before the event ends.

While we had a good time, I’m not sure we’ll be back next year. Here’s why… The games and events were entertaining for the very young children (i.e. 2-5yrs old). Granted, that’s the point, but I think it could have been more enjoyable for everyone… Starting with breakfast, there were pancakes, sausage and <del>orange juice</del> – excuse me, Sunny D, which is no more than maybe 5% juice. Because we got there early, we had to wait around for the various things to open and the egg hunt to start. We couldn’t even buy tickets before the line grew out to the parking lot, but I got to enjoy standing behind an older woman who was rudely smoking a cigarette amongst dozens of children and didn’t seem to know why she was in line… I purchased a $10 wrist band for my son, but doubt we got our money’s worth out of it w/ the various lines and overall quality of games, rides and prizes. The eggs for the youngsters had candy and the children could basically follow the person around who was tossing the eggs to replenish those that had been found already. Oh, and the “train” ride featured a scenic loop through their maintenance area with stellar views of chemical caution signs, fences and work trucks. Apparently, later, there was to be an egg hunt for adults with prizes including gift certificates to restaurants, but we had had enough.

All that said, next year we may check out the Easter event held at Carmichael park. As we understand it, their breakfast had healthier options, including fruit and juice, and the eggs didn’t have sugary candy… Check out the article at Carmichael.Patch.com. Here’s a snippet:

A fire engine from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department was parked nearby and at precisely 10 a.m., the truck’s horn blasted in the park signaling the start of the hunt. Kids and parents rushed to grab eggs like candy from a fallen pinata.

Unlike a fallen pinata, the hunt was sugarless.

“No candy this year, to be more healthy,” Crisante said.

Each golden egg contained a coupon that when redeemed at the Information Booth was exchanged for a gift certificate to Pinkberry, a frozen yogurt restaurant. The rest of the eggs contained stickers for the younger kids and small toys for the older ones.

Did you attend either event? What did you think? Do you have another Easter event to suggest?

Related posts:
