The report projects an estimated “4,095 total jobs” would be created and it would “generate $556 million in total spending and $11.3 million in fiscal benefits to government agencies during the construction period.” Additionally, they estimate it will “generate $25 million in total annual spending and $775,000 in annual fiscal benefits to government agencies during ongoing operations, above the jobs already in existence at ARCO Arena.”

I have some fond memories of going to a public pool while staying with family a few weeks during the Summer… My parents probably liked the fact that I wasn’t out riding my bike on busy streets or getting into trouble. In the Sacramento area, public pools also provide an alternative to the dangers of swimming in local rivers. Unfortunately, the number of pools open to the public is much lower this Summer.

The City of Sacramento recently announced which of the public pool will be open, or closed, due to budget reductions. Because funding to maintain the city’s swimming pools has been reduced from $3.5 million to under $1 million, several Sacramento area pools will be closed. Others will have reduced hours and/or services.

From: City of Sacramento Summer 2001 Aquatics Directory

Pool hours, dates & programming may be affected due to potential budget reductions beginning July 1, 2011. Recreational swim hours, fees, and dates may be subject to change. We regretfully cannot take any program registration payments at City pool facilities.

And, in an effort to help people during hard times, the Community Services Planning Council is looking to expand the hotline.

Callers using the 211 hotline can be referred to a wide variety of services that can hep with needs such as paying utility bills, mortgages, and other financial needs. Those who call also seek help finding temporary housing, children’s services and other help from nonprofit organizations. The service is also helpful during times of crisis and offers an alternative to the 911 system, which is for emergency situations only.

Currently only residents of Sacramento County can benefit from this service (in this region), but the council is looking to expand into five neighboring counties. By the end of the year they expect the hotline to handle over 55,000 calls and want to double that number over the next four years.

Sacramento hasn’t always been the capital of California. The state Capitol has been located in other cities such as Monterey, Vallejo and Benicia. It’s been in its current location since 1854, but even after that became permanent, there were several attempts to relocate it to various parts of the Bay Area. Construction on the actual Capitol building started in 1860 and was completed in 1874.

Tours are available, or you can roam around much of the building by yourself, free to view portraits of past Governors, the outer doors of the current Governor’s office, the upper galleries of the Senate and Assembly, and the preserved historic rooms showing what offices looked like in the 1800s. Under the dome (there are actually two – a dome inside a dome), in the Rotunda, is a statue depicting Columbus’ Last Appeal to Queen Isabella.

Outside, on the Capitol grounds, are various memorials and a beautiful rose garden. The park covers 40 acres and include many native plants, a trout pond, indian grinding rock, and a camilia grove honoring early pioneers. There are memorials recognizing the CA Mexican-American War, Firefighters, Peace Officers, Spanish American War, and Vientam Veterans, among others.
