The great people promoting the Wings Over Wine Country air show in Santa Rosa, CA have graciously provided tickets for you to win!

After somewhat of a hiatus from ExploreSacramento.com, I’ve decided to have the site completely redesigned! While most of the work has been done on a test blog, I will need to spend some time updating posts to take advantage of some of the new features, so please be patient during the transition.

Here are some of the issues that have been addressed:

Fresh design & new logo – The old theme was nice, but was getting stale. There was also no logo to speak of. I’m excited about the new look & feel of the site!
Widget-ready theme – The old theme required a lot of stuff to be hard-coded, making updates to the site difficult and limited functionality.
Improved navigation – The categories on the old theme weren’t easy to find if you didn’t know where to look. Now, they have a prominent position at the top and in the sidebar of each page.
Social networking – Now that @ExploreSac is on Twitter, I’m able to integrate some more interactivity into the site and also provide another method of contact.
Content syndication – Be sure to follow @ExploreSac on Twitter” href=”http://twitter.com/exploresac” target=”_blank”>@ExploreSac for the latest updates, utilize the RSS Feed, or subscribe via email using the form below.

If you notice any bugs/issues, please leave a comment and I’ll try to resolve them ASAP.

New Direction?

I’ve been debating this for a while, which may be evident by the lack of activity on ExploreSACRAMENTO.com lately… Should I take the blog in a slightly different direction?

I feel that I may be able to post more often and provide more of a service if I were to have a wider focus and include more news and items of interest rather than just things to do in Sacramento. I’ve covered quite a bit in that regard, already, and I guess I need to know where to draw the line. I have neither the time nor the resources to include everything there is to do in Sacramento and I would quickly forgo my agenda of keeping the blog family-oriented.

While I am definitely leaning toward moving in a new direction rather than disappoint with an inactive blog, I’d like to hear from you. Please feel free to comment and let me know what you think…

RSS Explained

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, is a web feed format frequently used to publish content from blogs or news sources. An RSS feed can contain a summary, or full article, from the source site and is an easy way for people to keep up-to-date with frequent changes. Many sites use others’ RSS feeds to provide more content to their visitors. In most cases the feeds will provide a link back to the source for the full article. Essentially, it is a way to pull the information to you, rather than have to go out and visit numerous sites to get news and updates.

Why use RSS Feeds?

As the Internet, and blogging community, has grown, so have our collections of bookmarks and resources we visit. Rather than going to each site, independently, RSS feeds can be used to collect the information and display it on another site or in a reader, such as Bloglines, My Yahoo, or Google’s Reader. There are many other choices, but rather than inundate you with those, the three provided here are some of the most popular.
