There are plenty of sources for news these days, what with the web, tweets, email alerts and, of course, television, radio and newspapers… But, a new Sacramento news aggregate site is here, bringing together news from a variety of local media sources.

Enter SactoNews.com

On the web site, visitors can find news on the web site, thrown together, mixed, sorted and mashed up, then provided in a nice, easy-to-read format, in order by date. Not only that, but the news mashup is also provided in a traditional RSS feed and is posted to Facebook and Twitter (coming soon).

Groupon – Daily Deals on the Best in Sacramento

Groupon (click here) is a discount site that offers a daily deal, somewhat along the lines of a daily coupon. The only catch is that there has to be enough people participating for it to happen. Group + coupon = Groupon.

For example, today’s deal is, basically, 51% off at 4th Street Grill, located at 400 L Street in downtown Sacramento. More specifically, you pay $17 and get a voucher valued at $35. As of this posting there are 238 buyers and the tipping point for the deal to be on was 25.

Obviously, the buyer gets a nice discounted meal, massage, etc., but what’s in it for the business? Groupon harnesses the buying power of the many and provides many new customers – i.e. 4th Street Grill now has 238 (at this time) new customers. Of course, some people may buy multiple Groupons, or give Groupons as gifts. Other fine print may apply, but the fact remains that you’ll get a great deal!

Sacramento comedy club offers free admission to state workers

Sacramento comedy club Laughs Unlimited, is bringing back “Furlough Friday” free admission in March for city, county and state employees. (The club is also extending the deal to the fourth non-furlough Friday this month, Mar. 27.)

A few details from an e-mail sent to The State Worker from club representative Jennifer Canfield:

Each Friday there are two shows at 8:00 or 10:30. There is a two item minimum in the showroom and due to limited seating, reservations are encouraged. For more information or to make a reservation please call 916-446-8128.

The 2 item minimum does still apply which can be anything from our bar (Alcoholic or Non-Alcoholic) or kitchen (Food or Dessert items). Seats are limited and we will “sell out” so make your reservations early!!

Post Modern Portraits of Women Who Have Healed Through Art at Tangent Gallery in June

Portraits of ordinary women, which include the healing art that helped them through difficult changes in their lives will open at Tangent Gallery, 2900 Franklin Blvd. (at 4th Ave.) in Sacramento, 2nd Saturday, June 12th from 6 to 10 pm. The gallery is also open on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm or by appointment (tangentgallery@gmail.com). The women are all students at the Women’s Wisdom Art Project, a program of Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Sacramento digital artist and photographer Ann Tracy recruited Woodland photographer George Streng to work on this project with her. Tracy and Streng wanted to go beyond the standard editorial portrait to create a post modern type of portraiture that includes art work created by the women to celebrate their journeys to increase their self-esteem and give them a sense of pride in themselves and what they have accomplished.

Tangent is an artist-run gallery/studio space established June of 2007. Its mission is to exhibit dynamic and compelling contemporary art, by both local artists and artists from afar, specifically art that may not be showcased in other Sacramento galleries. Tangent strives to serve the community of Sacramento exposing the art-viewing public to new ideas, mediums and forms while bringing something unique and positive to the neighborhoods of Curtis Park and Oak Park while attracting new visitors to the area.

Women’s Wisdom Project offers a variety of art experiences for women who want to broaden their creative lives. Designed as a uniquely feminine environment that supports the artistic and personal growth of women in all stages of life, Women’s Wisdom Project believes that artistic exploration naturally brings greater self-knowledge. Classes, which include lunch, are free and taught by professional artists. They include drawing, textiles, clay, mixed media, poetry, gourd crafting, creative writing, and painting with acrylics and water color.

The Women’s Wisdom Project offers a safe, nurturing environment for women of all backgrounds. Through the support of SFBFS staff, volunteers, and other students (each other), women are introduced to art and its healing properties. Thus, women realize their true potentials and learn the importance of imagination, control, patience and emotional discipline. Women working together in an informal setting provide a warm comfortable place for artistic exploration. All women who wish to participate are welcome.

Twenty-six (26) greater Sacramento area museums will be offering free admission, all day long, during the 12th Annual Sacramento Museum Day. This event is presented by the Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM), and proudly supported by Umpqua Bank. Sacramento Museum Day takes place Saturday, February 6, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (all participating museums close at 5 p.m., with the last guests admitted at 4 p.m.).

Iron Mountain shredders will be on site to safely destroy your personal papers, CDs, DVDs and floppy disks in your presence. Free food, games and other activities will be available. All shredded items will be recycled and there is a five box (banker’s size) limit per car.
