Innovative multimedia exhibit challenges conventional views on “health” through series of high tech video games & interactive learning stations

The California Museum announced the opening of a first of its kind in the nation multimedia exhibit “Health Happens Here” on Tues., Oct. 16, 2012.  Developed in partnership with The California Endowment over a two year period, the innovative, interactive exhibit invites visitors to explore the truth about good health beyond doctors, diet and exercise.

“You don’t change the conventional wisdom about health with a conventional exhibit, and ‘Health Happens Here’ is anything but conventional,” said Daniel Zingale, Senior Vice President of The California Endowment.  “It is more than an exhibit.  It’s the voice of everyday Californians who know their health and their lives depend on where they live, work and play.”

The exhibit is based upon the newest statistics from the U.S. Census and Measure of America’s Human Development research, which exposed the startling fact that zip codes can predict life expectancy.  The exhibit is an interactive adventure through a virtual school cafeteria, a fateful trip to the grocery store, a brush with school yard bullies, and a chance for visitors to physically navigate a city street where surroundings can be a matter of life and death.

In another groundbreaking first, visitors earn points as they interact with the exhibit that turn in to real dollars for their choice among 10 charities promoting health in California.

“California has long been regarded as the most health-conscious state in the nation,” said Richard Costigan III, Chair of The California Museum’s Board of Trustees.  “Health Happens Here’ takes our state’s leadership on health to the next level, making the connections among individual, community and statewide decisions and California’s legendary quality of life.”

Designed by West Office Exhibit Design in Oakland with content created by California youth, the gallery features kid-friendly high tech games and videos throughout 10 interactive stations, where visitors play games while exploring key factors relating to health.  For example, in “Fight Blight,” visitors learn how to build healthier communities by discovering how streets, houses, schools, sidewalks, streetlights, businesses, freeways, and parks can affect an individual’s health.

“As a nonprofit institution, The California Museum is dedicated to educating and enlightening over 50,000 annual student visitors with the state’s history and culture of innovation,” said executive director Dori Moorehead. “By adding ‘Health Happens Here’ to our existing programming, we are able to further that mission by redefining the concept of health in the present which will help create a healthier state in the future. By educating California’s next generation of dreamers on how they can increase their access to choices, the Museum is able to help shape California’s long-term well-being and continued status as the hub of innovation in the future.”

The Images of America series chronicles the history of small towns and downtowns across the country. Each title features more than 200 vintage images, capturing often forgotten bygone times and bringing to life the people, places, and events that defined a community.

Local authors transform dusty albums and artifacts into meaningful walks down memory lane. Millions of vintage images become tiny time capsules, re-establishing memories of the formerly familiar, introducing generations to what once was, and reminding us all of what has been (and can be) in every corner of our nation. The popular series has expanded over time to preserve and celebrate additional worthy topics including local landmarks, architecture, ethnic groups, and more.

As you can see, if you’ve visited ExploreSacramento.com before, the site has an all new look & feel. It was about time for a major update for the site, but with a lot on my plate at the moment, I was putting it off. Unfortunately, it was necessary for the update to come sooner rather than later…

Due to a vulnerability with the previous theme, the site got hacked and I received a malware warning. I haven’t received notice from anyone that was affected adversely, but I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I cleaned house as soon as possible, but was still receiving the warnings. So, today, with some time to spare, I uploaded a whole new theme and have been working on converting the site over.

LOS ANGELES — Space shuttle Endeavour landed safely at the Los Angeles International Airport Friday after a whirlwind aerial tour around California landmarks.

The flyover took Endeavour over the state Capitol, Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood Sign and other icons en route to the Los Angeles airport, where the shuttle will be prepped for a slow-speed journey to its museum home next month.

At the Santa Monica Pier, spectators pointed their cameras skyward and some chanted, “USA! USA!” as Endeavour swooped along the coast.

“Even though it was a few seconds, it was a unique experience to witness history,” said Andrew Lerner, 23, of Santa Monica.

Thousands of spectators jammed rooftop buildings and streets in Sacramento, cheering as Endeavour made two loops around the state Capitol. A crowd of schoolchildren squealed in delight during the second flyover.

Matthew Montgomery took a break from his work as a legislative aide and brought his 2-year-old son, Tavion, to see Endeavour airborne.

“I was going to leave him in daycare but thought this is a once-in-a-lifetime deal,” said Montgomery, whose aunt was an engineer on the early Apollo missions.

Since Endeavour buzzed by some of the Golden State’s most iconic sights, law enforcement and transportation authorities warned motorists not to “gawk and drive.”

“We want people to take in this majestic show,” Los Angeles police Cmdr. Scott Kroeber said earlier this week. “But if you’re driving, please drive and don’t try to take in the show simultaneously.”

Traffic came to a near stop along a freeway near the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory east of Los Angeles when motorists pulled off to the shoulder to watch. California Highway Patrol officers came through and blared on loud speakers for people to move on.

Extra officers were on duty along the freeways near the airport to make sure traffic flowed smoothly as the shuttle zoomed overhead.

Endeavour returned to its birthplace Thursday after an emotional cross-country ferry flight that made a special flyover of Tucson, Ariz., to honor its last commander, Mark Kelly, and his wife, former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

NASA’s shuttle fleet, which retired last year after three decades of flight, was assembled in Palmdale near Edwards Air Force Base where Endeavour took off Friday morning for the aerial tour. The military outpost 100 miles north of Los Angeles served as the original shuttle landing strip and remained a backup site in case of stormy weather at Cape Canaveral, Fla.

“We’re so excited to be welcoming Endeavour home in grand style with these flyovers,” Jeffrey Rudolph, president of the California Science Center, said earlier this week.

The youngest shuttle, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which blew up during liftoff in 1986. NASA lost another shuttle, Columbia, in 2003 when it disintegrated during re-entry. Fourteen astronauts were killed.

During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles.

On its maiden flight in 1992, a trio of spacewalking astronauts grabbed a stranded communications satellite in for repair. It also flew the first repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope to fix a faulty mirror. But most of its flights ferried cargo and equipment to the International Space Station, which is near completion.

Under White House orders to explore beyond low-Earth orbit, NASA is hitching rides on Russian rockets to the orbiting laboratory until private companies can provide regular service.

Endeavour is the second of three remaining shuttles to head to its retirement home. In April, Discovery arrived at the Smithsonian Institution’s hangar in Virginia. Atlantis, which closed out the shuttle program, will stay in Florida where it will be towed a short distance to the Kennedy Space Center’s visitor center in the fall.

Endeavour will remain at an airport hangar for several weeks as crews ready the shuttle for its own road trip. Unlike Atlantis, it will creep through city streets to the California Science Center near downtown.

Some 400 trees will be cleared along the 12-mile route to make room, a move that has riled some residents in affected neighborhoods. Museum officials have pledged to replant double the number of chopped trees.
